Around the age of 20, Suzanne Bergeron entered the École des beaux-arts de Québec, where she took lessons from Jean Paul Lemieux (1904-1990). In 1955, she had her first solo exhibition at the Agnès Lefort Gallery in Montreal.
That same year, she won second prize in painting at the Concours artistiques de la province, which allowed her to travel to Paris with her husband and study at the École du Louvre.
In 1956 she received a medal from the City of Paris and the following year a grant from the Royal Society of Canada. The Parisian gallery Marcel Bernheim then exhibited her work, which was on the borderline between figuration and abstraction. From the end of the 1950s, Bergeron participated in several group exhibitions in Canada, France and Brazil (Biennale of São Paulo, 1959). She received a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts in 1963 and spent four years in France. After the retrospective exhibition devoted to her by the Muse du Québec in 1974, she experienced health problems that kept her away from the art scene until 1990.
Thereafter, her works were exhibited in various galleries, notably at the Galerie municipale du Palais Montcalm (Québec, 1991). A-E.V.
ARTICLE IN FRENCH | Suzanne Bergeron est revenue d'Europe depuis quelque temps. Elle y était allée avec une certaine réputation, puisqu'elle avait obtenu le prix de la Province de Québec. Cette réputation commençante n'a fait, dirait-on, que s'affermir. Médaillée de la Ville de Paris, boursière de la Société Royale, l'artiste a participé à une foule d'expositions, dont certaines passent pour ne s'ouvrir qu'aux talents déjà affirmés, tant en Europe qu'au Canada. Enfin, très récemment, elle a été choisie comme un des quatre peintres canadiens qui représenteront ce pays à la biennale de Sao Paulo en 1959.
