Born in Rome in 1976, Roberta Coni graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1999, and pursued her studies abroad with two grants, in Spain and the United States. Primarily interested in portraiture, Coni mixes the classical technique of oil painting with a heavy body paste of her own creation, proposing an interpretation of the contemplative soul in continuous introspection.
Female subjects take center stage in Coni’s work. She paints them simultaneously with great delicacy and extreme roughness; her close-ups on their faces engage the viewer in a way that is intimate and hypnotic.
“The Red Tent” is a reference to the place where pre-modern women of certain tribes would gather to celebrate their lunar cycle, give birth, or simply spend their time together. A place of refuge and support, a symbol of solidarity and feminine wisdom, the “red tent”, like Roberta Coni’s paintings, is an anthem to the strength and sensitivity of women.
The female figures in gorgeous paintings by Roberta Coni look very natural and realistic. A glance at her art is a balm for the soul. How did she enchant us?
The astonishing work of the artist rests on the precise observation of the object of interest. From the first glance, she captures your experiences through the retina. Then she starts to paint with elegance and care, to persuade us that a part of herself had merged with her portraits. She takes great care. Maybe, the passage of time doesn‘t mean anything to her at that moment. She spends time, as we say, face-to-face with her models, so that she could transfer their image most reliably onto canvas.
