Biography

Abel Bentín is a Peruvian contemporary artist known for a multidisciplinary practice that spans painting, sculpture, installation, and video. Born in Lima in 1972, he lives and works between Peru and Europe. His work is distinguished by a deep reflection on identity, power, symbolic violence, and social structures, often approached with subtle irony and a deliberately ambiguous aesthetic.

Bentín has developed a visual language influenced by Western art history, popular culture, political imagery, and media narratives. He appropriates and reconfigures symbols of authority, luxury, and the sacred to expose their contradictions and fragility. His works frequently play on the contrast between seductive materials or forms and critical content, creating a dissonance that invites viewers to question their own cultural and ideological references.

Trained at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Abel Bentín emerged on the Latin American art scene in the early 2000s. His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Peru and internationally, including in Europe and the United States. He has also participated in several biennials and curatorial projects, establishing his position as a significant figure in contemporary Peruvian art.

Through a conceptual and engaged body of work, Abel Bentín examines mechanisms of domination, representation, and collective memory. His approach—both intellectual and visual—positions art as a space of tension between aesthetics and critique, where artistic practice becomes a tool for analyzing the contemporary world.
