Alesandro Ljubicic Bosnian, b. 1986

Alesandro Ljubicic (b. 1986) is a Sydney-based contemporary artist known for his lush, textural abstract floral paintings that draw viewers in.

Flowers burst from Ljubicic’s large canvases, with sweeping, vivid strokes of colour that express his intense emotional response to the beauty of nature. Drawing inspiration from floral arrangements he encounters, the artist often begins by collecting images from Instagram. These are then transformed into digital collages in Photoshop, where he carefully balances the colours and harmony before embarking on the spontaneous act of painting. His smaller panels, while taking just as much time to create as the larger floral works, delve deeper into the effects of layering paint. Swirls and waves of colour resist blending, competing to outshine one another, while the marks of Ljubicic’s brush and palette knife are visible. Thick layers of oil paint are dragged and sculpted to create dynamic, tactile surfaces.

 

In his latest work, Ljubicic explores the relationship between nature and the global climate crisis. By incorporating thick oil paint and collage techniques, he aims to capture the urgency and complexity of this pressing issue. The use of linen and oil within the collage symbolizes the intersection of nature and human influence, prompting viewers to reflect on the deep interconnection between humanity and the environment, and how our actions are shaping its future. 

 

"Using flowers as my primary subject, I aim to symbolize the delicate beauty of nature in the face of the challenges it currently endures. The thick oil paint serves as a metaphor for the heavy burden placed upon our environment due to human activity and climate change. I want my artwork to provoke contemplation and inspire action. By emphasizing the need to preserve and protect our natural world, I hope to raise awareness about the urgency of addressing the global climate crisis."

 

Born in Jajce, Central Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ljubicic moved to Sydney in 1993, where he studied at the National School of Art. A finalist for numerous awards, he completed his degree in Bachelor of Fine Art, earning High Distinction in Painting and Drawing. He also won the prestigious William Fletcher Scholarship and held a solo exhibition at Xavier Art Space, which was opened by broadcaster Alan Jones AO, with proceeds benefiting the Cancer Foundation. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Ljubicic has a sharp business acumen. Without formal business training, he co-founded The Sydney Art Store, one of Australia’s leading art supply businesses, with the support of his parents.
