Galerie LeRoyer Montreal is delighted to present a focus exhibition with Fiona Ackerman, on view throughout February.

Fiona Ackerman’s work charts a thoughtful exploration between intuition and intention, where gesture meets deliberation and emotion intersects with form. Working in series, she treats each body of work as a distinct chapter, developing vibrant, layered paintings and immersive large-scale murals that reflect on abstraction and representation while engaging with themes of memory, environment, and visual perception.

Ackerman’s practice fluidly extends beyond painting into video, sound, and performative elements, foregrounding process as an active component of meaning. Through a nuanced interplay of meticulous detail and spontaneous expression, her work invites viewers into a space where structure and freedom coexist, encouraging sustained reflection on the very act of seeing.

Several of Fiona Ackerman’s series are inspired by unique conceptual ideas, blending the everyday with the extraordinary. In Paper Trail, crumpled notes found in her neighbourhood become vibrant paintings, weaving narrative and abstraction into unexpected stories.

In Glasslands, she explores dualities, nature versus the artificial, reality versus perception, drawing on the concept of heterotopia, or a “world within worlds.” Layered imagery and mirrored forms create works that are visually striking while inviting deeper reflection on perception and meaning.

“The most exciting part of painting is finishing a piece and realizing, ‘I didn’t know I had that in my mind.’ It’s about the joy of surprising yourself.”
