Ai Weiwei transforms the humble bicycle into a pair of new silkscreen prints adorned with precious metal leaf.

Ai Weiwei, one of the most influential artists of our time, moves fluidly between sculpture, installation, film, and social commentary. Throughout his career, he has used the bicycle as a powerful symbolic motif to explore cultural memory and social change, most notably in his seminal Forever Bicycles series, where thousands of bicycles are assembled into towering abstract monuments.

This limited edition pair of prints translates the visual language of those monumental sculptures into hypnotic two-dimensional compositions. Hand-finished with precious metal leaf, each edition layers wheels into rhythmic, reflective surfaces where repetition, texture, and light create a striking sense of movement. Familiar objects are transformed into powerful meditations on mobility, freedom, collective memory, and the era of rapid modernisation that has reshaped our global economic and social landscape.

In Forever Bicycles, Ai Weiwei builds a sculptural language out of repetition, scale, and dislocation. Drawn from the well-known “Forever” bicycle brand, the series takes an object once embedded in daily life and reconfigures it into vast, interlocking structures that feel at once ordered and unstable. As the frames multiply, the bicycle loses its practical function and becomes something else entirely: a study in accumulation, movement, and the tension between the individual unit and the larger system. Across its many iterations, the series turns an everyday form into a striking meditation on transformation, perception, and the changing conditions of contemporary life.
