In Between Space and Time, Zhuang Hong-Yi’s upcoming solo exhibition at Galerie LeRoyer Toronto, contemplates the moment before full bloom: the delicate tension between the tranquility and wild essences of the natural world.
Across his flowerbed works, thousands of hand-folded ‘petals’ of rice paper cascade across canvas. Vibrant colours rise, recede, and reassemble as viewers move, turning each work into an interactive experience with light, rhythm, and perception.

Rather than simply depicting nature, Zhuang captures and transmits its sensation and the emotions it conjures in us all: the pulse of a field, the density of petals, the force of renewal. Honouring the simplicity and purity of the flower, Zhuang allows natural beauty to take centre stage. His practice brings together meticulous technique and expansive visual impact. The tactile quality and emphasis on materiality blur the lines between sculptural object and painting, creating a wholly unique encounter with artwork.

“My art is about happiness, enrichment, and re-enchantment; I want people to feel joy by reconnecting them with the calmness of nature, which is why the flower is so dominant in my paintings. Everywhere around the world, flowers represent peace, happiness, and prosperity. We might not all speak the same language, but we can all read flowers…"
