What happens when a painting no longer begins with an image?
For Francisco Valverde, the image is not the point of departure but the final consequence of a material process. His works are constructed through the accumulation of translucent layers whose behavior is shaped by gravity, time, temperature, and light. Rather than serving as a vehicle for representation, material becomes the place where form gradually emerges.
The resulting works resist the conventions of painting. They do not depict light; they depend upon it. Color is not applied to a surface but suspended within depth, allowing the work to change continuously as the surrounding light shifts. Nothing in the object itself moves, yet what becomes visible is never entirely the same.
Valverde does not treat matter as a passive medium. It possesses its own physical logic, one that cannot be fully predicted or controlled. His role is not to impose form but to establish the conditions from which it can emerge. The finished work records that encounter between intention and the inherent behavior of material.
The exhibition proposes a different understanding of the image. Rather than something composed or represented, the image appears as the visible trace of an event already completed. What confronts the viewer is therefore not simply an object, but an experience whose appearance remains in continuous negotiation with light, space, and time.
